It has to be straightforward, flexible and musical. And if it has flashing lights, all the better!

The JIC's two founding members Phil and Paul both use the P3 sequencer - a unique instrument designed by a friend of ours specifically for the kind of looping, evolving electronic ambient music that we always wanted to do. Other gear just didn't offer enough freedom and this little baby, developed with plenty of input from us, has become the backbone of our live and studio work.

Some photos of our gear (and other stuff) here.

Paul Nagle

Paul mostly plays the intricate, evolving blips, bleeps and basses of the P3 sequencer. He also plays keyboards, drum machines and audio looping devices and has a live rig that varies according to his mood. He might bring out his Oberheim 2-Voice or Digisound modular synth on occasion but mostly you'll see him manipulate and warp samples on the Roland V-Synth, produce lush phasey strings and smooth solos on the Access Virus Polar or pounding basses and drums from his Korg Radias and Electribes.

Phil Smillie

Phil plays guitars, synths, drum machines and, of course, his P3 sequencer. Despite rumours to the contrary, Phil chose the Godin guitar not because of the cool way it glows under UV light but for its sophisticated pickup system that allows him to play his synths and program his P3 sequencer from the guitar.
